Start with what is going inside
Measure what you are storing, then add working room around it. A vehicle that just fits is a vehicle you cannot open the door on. As a rule of thumb, allow at least 600mm of clear space either side of anything you need to walk around, and a full metre if you will be working on it.
Then think about what you will own in five years, not just today. Extending a shed later costs far more than adding a bay at the design stage.
| What you are storing | Practical minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| One car | 3m x 6m | 3.5m x 6.5m |
| Two cars side by side | 6m x 6m | 7m x 7m |
| Two cars plus storage or a bench | 6m x 9m | 7m x 9m |
| Car plus a home workshop | 7m x 9m | 9m x 12m |
| Caravan (typical 6m van) | 4m x 9m | 4.5m x 10m |
| Large caravan or motorhome | 4.5m x 12m | 6m x 13m |
| Boat on a trailer | 4m x 9m | 4.5m x 10m |
| Tractor and implements | 9m x 12m | 12m x 18m |
| Hay or fodder storage | 12m x 18m | 15m x 24m |
Sizes are span (width) x length and are a starting point for conversation, not a fixed value. Your final size depends on your block, setbacks, site cover and what the shed has to do.
